Thanksgiving break is finally here. Thanksgiving break is different from other breaks because it's so short and it's not something you really anticipate. It always sort of creeps on you. The week off is the perfect time to just relax and reflect, but there are negatives and positives to everything and Thanksgiving break is no different.
I think being in college is a period of one's life where their diet may be at its worse. At school, microwaveable food and snacks are staples of student's diet. I live in an apartment, so sometimes I cook but besides standard breakfast foods, most of my meals are far from appetizing. Some nights, sleep is the optimal dinner option. But on Thanksgiving, I eat until I can't anymore. I, along with other college students, are so grateful to eat a huge home-cooked meal.
The best part besides the food is getting to see friends from home. College friends are cool but friends from home are the friends I grew up with and really know. They're actually more like family than friends and being able to see them, even it's for one or two days, is like a preview for winter break.
Thanksgiving is great because I get to spend time with family, but sometimes family can get bothersome. I'm sure every college student can relate when it comes to seeing relatives over break and their questions. Every year, the same questions are asked: How is school? Whats your major? Any girlfriends? All I want to do is eat in peace.
In college, when you have a break, is it really a break? Some professors are nice enough to not give assignments over the short week, but most are not. I have three presentations, and an exam the week after. So every second I spend lounging is really filled with guilt. When I want go out with friends, I have to plan around my hours designated for work and study.
So there you have it. Thanksgiving is bittersweet, but when you love food the way I do, nothing can really ruin it.
