As Seth from "Superbad" once said: "It's more of a love-hate thing; sometimes, I really love partying."
For two years straight, I've been a Spotify Premium member (the college discount makes the option only $5 a month.) Not bad, considering that over 24 months I only spend $120 for a service that I use every day. However, that was until I got a new debit card. I didn't change the payment information on my account after a couple of weeks of skating past the warnings that my account would get relegated to "normal" Spotify—right in time for my information to get hacked. For those of you who are unaware, Spotify was hacked on April 27, resulting in over 300 accounts getting leaked onto the web, allowing people to see names, card numbers and addresses. Perfect.
"They won't leave in the night; have no fear that they might desert me."
That quote is from Shirley Bassey's song, "Diamonds are Forever." That's how I felt about Spotify until it did leave me, and left me with a vast reduction in features and advertisements. It made me look at the Spotify company as a whole. Do I really want to go back to this paid app (which is awful on my PS4, regardless if premium is active or not), or should I stick to Soundcloud? My app aside, Soundcloud isn't the safest bet right now after a report was recently released that stated Soundcloud has been losing money for months now. The site is free and it contains advertisements, but those are minimal compared to the number of ads that Spotify plays when you don't pay for premium features. Should I go back to my old high-school fling, Pandora? Well, I can't pick the songs individually, so no. That's out. There is iTunes and Apple Music, but there isn't enough space on my phone to hold a fraction of my music library, and no thank you to another paid service. I am a broke college student here!
After three days of struggling with the neverending internal debate, I gave in when I realized that I had to play music at a party, and all of my playlists are located on Spotify, so I caved. This is my "I'm staying with you because I don't want to move my CDs out of my car" moment. It might not be easy to love your favorite app all of the time, but in the end, it's always worth it. Right now, I'm playing Grizzly Bear on my phone's Spotify app, but I'm controlling it from my laptop across the room. How cool is that? Now I'm back chasing the rabbit down the "suggested artists" hole, jamming in my car with no commercial breaks and it feels so nice, even with a $5 price tag.
Pro Prank Tip: Leave a device on and open, and connect it to some speakers. Then leave the house, and shadow control the device to play "Toxic" by Brittany Spears until your roommates move out.
