To My Best Friend: A Poem

No longer by my side, but forever in my heart.

To My Best Friend: A Poem

To my best friend,

You have been gone for so long.

Some will say you were only a dog,

But to me, you were more.

When I was sad or upset, you comforted me

When I was angry or crying, you calmed me.

From when I was only 6 until I was 17, you were there

Now months have passed, now I'm 18, and you can't be here.

If I could build a road to wherever you are, I'd walk there,

No matter how far.

I'd bring you home, and home you'd stay,

Forever to run, to sleep, to cuddle and play.

Our first Christmas without you; it just won't be the same.

Sonny, I miss you... More and more every day.

---

My dog, Sonny (pictured above), passed away In March. I had him since I was about six years old. He got sick in 2017 and we were scared he wouldn't see Christmas 2017. He pushed through and saw the turn of the New Year into 2018. As early 2018 passed, we saw he wasn't getting better. We realized what was best for him. On March 20, 2018, I wore all black to school and cried almost the whole day. My best friend held my hand at lunch and when I got home, I knew it was time. I held him the whole way to the vet and when we got there, I knew I had to be back in the room with him. I held him the whole time. When he was gone, I was angry... angry with the vet. With myself. But I knew anger wouldn't bring Sonny back.

He was a good boy. I loved him with all my heart and I still do. I have his collar at home and I plan on getting a memorial tattoo for my grumpy old man. Pets are family members too; losing them can be as hard as losing a human family member.

Rest in peace, Sonny. No longer by my side, but forever in my heart.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
