In a society where we are so dependent on technology and social media it is important to take a moment to step away from our online lives and focus on the now. We’re all guilty of it, including me. Wake up, check Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat without even getting out of bed. Technically, we are present in the now but our attention is mostly online. Is this really living? So many things are missed when we are so busy seeing the world through our phones and tablets. Take some time, whether it be a few hours or days, to disconnect and see the world as you were meant to; not through that Valencia filter.
This past summer my family took a trip to Europe where we visited London and Paris. My parents decided (since international data plans are expensive and all) to cut my sister and I off for the whole trip. I was immediately worried about my Instagram because without Wi-Fi I would not be able to upload those insta-worthy shots of the Eiffel Tower or Big Ben. Thinking back on this situation, I am so happy that my parents decided to cut me off. It was liberating to have two weeks free from technology. Had I been glued to my phone the entire time, I know that I wouldn’t have half of the memories that I do today.
Look up once and a while. While social media and technology are a huge part of our lives, I encourage you to take some time away from it. Try something new, go for a walk, ride a bike or go to the beach. Whatever you decide to do, do it and enjoy it. The world is so much bigger than reaching a certain amount of followers on Twitter or Instagram. I guarantee you’ll feel liberated even if you’re just parting ways with your phone for a few hours.
As a society that is so incredibly plugged in, our presence online is something that holds a high value. We get so caught up in making sure that our lives look picture perfect online but forget to do this in our day-to-day lives. We do this to show followers of where we are, what we’re doing, and how much fun we’re having while doing it. By trying to look like we are having fun, the actual element of fun gets lost in all of the chaos. Trying to think of a witty Instagram caption or a funny tweet won’t allow your offline self to live the best life possible. Moments in life aren’t always meant to be documented and most of the time it doesn’t need to be on your Twitter or your Snapchat story.
While I am not against the use of technology ,as it is a huge part of our lives, I believe that monitoring your use and taking time to unplug is important. While it is important to establish your online presence, it is more important to get in touch with your world, your surroundings and figure out where you fit inside of it. Technology will always be there but life keeps moving; make sure you don’t miss it.
