I went into the theater not having seen any previews, summaries, or critic reviews, and I was blown away by "Alice Through The Looking Glass." I was glad I didn't because, afterwards, when I was curious to see if others enjoyed it as much as I did, I saw some were unenthusiastic and thought it didn't live up to their expectations. If I read these before, I might have not appreciated it as much, but just picked out the negative. So if you're interested to see it, don't read them either!
It is pretty rare these days to see a movie with not only a good plot and fantastic graphics, but also a good message to take with you. "Alice Through The Looking Glass" was just that. While the movie was slightly more action-packed than any of Lewis Carroll's books are, and some story lines alter a little, that is to be expected in all films.
I thought many of the characters became even more human and developed than before, and I really enjoyed seeing the history of how some things came about in Wonderland.
Also, even though some of the trippy, kooky, lazy-ness of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland was lost, there are still so many interesting twists and turns that get introduced. For example, the character "Time", played by Sacha Baron Cohen, was, to me, a curveball and added not only comic relief but played a huge role in the plot development.
It is partly a sequel to the 2010 "Alice In Wonderland" film directed by Tim Burton, and partly a prequel to it. It follows some of Alice's plot lines in her "real" life outside of Wonderland like any normal sequel would. Yet in this film Alice goes back in time (in Wonderland) and we find out a lot about how things came to be in Wonderland, such as why the Red and White queens are enemies, since they were once close sisters, and more.
The messages in this film were raw and clear, and each character helped bring them out:
1. Almost nothing is impossible, AKA "If there is a will, there is a way."
-Alice
2. You only have one family, cherish them and don't let arguments cause permanent damage. You never know what will happen.
-Mad Hatter, the White Queen
3. Cherish your life and surroundings. Eventually, we will all have to part from everything in this world.
-Time
"Alice Through The Looking Glass" exceeded my expectations and I would definitely see it again! I highly recommend it for anyone who likes Wonderland, wants to escape and be entertained!
