Long-distance relationships are hard. Most of the contact you have is via text or FaceTime, which means missing out on grabbing lunch or seeing a movie. It is difficult, but even more difficult when it is your best friend. You don't have anybody to go shopping with on a rainy Saturday afternoon and nobody to dance with at the bar when your favorite song comes on. You don't get to have sleepovers and talk about what an ass your ex is, and you definitely don't get to cry on their shoulder when your heart is broken. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing your best friend after months of not seeing them. You get to catch up like you never left, and she already knows the gossip because you FaceTime every day. If you have a bestie who lives miles away from you, you will understand these seven things every long-distance best friends know.
1. FaceTime is your best friend.
FaceTiming was designed for long-distance relationships. You get to hear your BFF's goofy laugh and watch their facial expressions when telling a story. You get to see the color they dyed their hair, or the outfit they are wearing out to the bar. FaceTime is almost as good as seeing them. Whether it is at 2 A.M. or in the middle of the afternoon, I always pick up a FaceTime call from my bestie.
2. Not being able to share their clothes.
One of the worst things about your best friend living far away is not being able to share their closet. Since you are the same size, you got used to borrowing blouses and trading shoes. You can't run over and grab that shirt she wore last weekend, you are stuck wearing that shirt you already wore out tonight.
3. Eating alone.
You and your best friend always grabbed dinner together. Now that you live so far away, you often find yourself eating alone. Margarita Monday or Taco Tuesday just isn't the same when you are by yourself.
4. When you and your besties don't live in the same zip code, the group chat is lit.
The group chat doesn't sleep when you and your best friends live in different zip codes. You are constantly asking what you are doing, how much you miss each other and constant updates of your day. Cute boy at the grocery store? Group chat. Got your nails done? Group chat. Need a way to get out of that date with your creepy co-worker? Group chat. The amount of screenshots in the group chat is dangerous, you never want to be the talk of a girl and her group chat.
5. Planning a vacation to go see them.
It is so great when you get to go see them for the first time in forever! You always get so excited when you plan a trip to go visit your best friend. You don't even mind the long car ride or the process of finding a cheap plane ticket because you are so excited to see them! There is no greater feeling than being reunited with your best friends.
6. And when you do visit, you make up for lost time.
Since you can't hang out every day like you used to, you have to make up for lost time. You have every second of the day planned, even before you visit. You have a complete detailed list of every activity planned for the day and night. It is like nothing changed when you get together for a fun day, and you realize how truly lucky you are to have such a great best friend.
7. Saying goodbye.
Nothing is worse than saying goodbye. You cry and hug and already start to plan your next visit with each other. You realize how much you miss hanging out with your bestie, but you can't wait for the next time. I think long-distance friendships make you value your time together more. The hugs are tighter, the words are more meaningful and the nights are filled with laughter and fun. You worry about the important stuff when the little time you have together, and forget all the drama. I love having a long-distance friendship.
