This past weekend, I had the privilege of going to Lollapalooza in Chicago. This was my first music festival, and I cannot explain the amount of excitement I was feeling the days prior to the festival. I think I was so eager to go that I forgot to bring some key essentials. So let me help you out before you make the same mistakes I did!
- Proper attire
- Please, for the sake of others, dress properly when you go to these things. The weather is sporadic, but whichever festival you go to look at the weather and plan ahead. I cannot tell you how many people I saw wearing jeans, flip-flops and long sleeve shirts at Lolla. It was about 90 degrees EVERYDAY. Do not be one of those people. You will be hot, your feet will hurt, and you will be sad.
- Sunscreen
- This goes along with checking the weather and planning ahead. The last thing you want is to get sunburnt the first day…talk about the ultimate Debbie Downer.
- Water
- At Lolla, you were allowed two sealed water bottles upon entry and trust me that was not enough. Invest in a Camelbak, those things can be life savers.
- Snacks
- If you are a poor college student like me pack up as many snacks as you can. These festivals aren’t cheap.
- Plastic bags
- This one might seem a bit odd, but if it rains you’ll be happy you brought them. You can put your cell phone, wallet, etc. in them.
- Fanny pack
- You can make fun of me if you want, but there is no better way to carry your belongings around than a fanny pack. Not to mention some fanny packs have stellar designs and look totally awesome.
- Things to keep you in the shade
- Things I include under this are a hat and glasses. If you are camping out at a festival then a pop up tent is a must. Along with that, you need to hang up some blankets or a flag or something to keep the sun from frying you.
- Baby Powder and ChapStick
- Yeah I am serious about this one too… chaffing? No fun… chapped lips? Easily as awful. You can laugh at this, but lets just say I told you so.
- Toiletries
- Hand sanitizer, baby wipes, toilet paper, and tissue can be crazy helpful. Nothing better than feeling clean.
- Great Group of Friends
- The experience is only enhanced when you are with a great group of friends. No one lets you be yourself more and encourages you to go make an idiot of yourself.
So there you go, the music festival essentials. Remember this list for next year when festival season kicks back up, it could save your life!
