To The Logical Person Pursuing Faith

If something does not add up in my mind, I do not believe it. Yet how do I maintain my faith? The Lord.

Hebrews 11:1-3 reads, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see... By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible."

How are we expected to blindly accept a figure who has supposedly designed our entire lives ahead of us? How are we supposed to accept a high and mighty, all-knowing God who lets mass executions occur, children die and poverty exist?

You ask how he possibly could have created a world as intricate and delicate and wonderful as this.

Scientists ask the same question, and "claim that the more they understand the world through their science, the more they admire God." Who is to tell us that everything that we have worked for, the positions we hold, the money we earn, is all meaningless?

The Lord.

"For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself... For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life" (Galatians 6:3-8).

In school I was taught about the Big Bang Theory, evolution and the belief that everything I accomplished was entirely because I worked for it. I was above average in my classes, incredibly involved and overly confident - if I wanted it, I would make sure I got it. Yet I was only creating temporary satisfaction, and reaping corruption through my pursuit of worldy endeavors.

However, the Lord created us and the Lord knows exactly how to draw us to him - he eternally pursues us. Therefore he targets what means the most to us; for me that is the people I love and my intelligence.

High school physics is a monster, yet I pridefully conquered it. That is, until one unit left me so frustrated and hopelessly lost that I spent the night before the test crying. That night I did something I had not done since my childhood. I prayed.

I took that test, guessing on over half of it (including three free response questions), literally bubbling in random letters and writing down random numbers. My heart sank as I walked into class the following day, waiting to see my score.

I checked the score posting three times, and talked to my teacher to confirm my score. 100.

However minuscule and irrelevant that may sound to some, I slowly started to open my heart to the Lord. Yet God was not done with me.

In the following weeks my relationship with one of the most important people in my life would shatter, and I would break along with it.

"When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (Psalms 61:2).

God uses pain to pull us closer to him. Without him I would have never fully healed.

This article is for those who are like me. Every time I open the Bible I finish with an endless stream of questions, and distraught that I am not enough for the Lord - I am constantly wondering why I cannot have the strong, unwavering faith of those who surround me.

To the logical student pursuing faith: it is okay to question your faith. It is okay to ask the tough questions. God loves you, and he will never stop pursuing you, just as he never stopped pursuing me.

Have peace in knowing the pride you seek, the logic you crave, and the deeds you perform are nothing. Release the angst produced from the need for constant understanding. You can let go of the struggles of this world and the sense you attempt to derive from it.

Open your mind and allow yourself to get lost in Him.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
