5 Local Bands In Atlanta You HAVE To Support

We all spend the money to go to big concerts, but what if you could get a better experience for less?

If you’re like me, you have probably seen multiple Instagrams or Snapchats flaunting the wonderful (and expensive) concerts that have been happening around Atlanta. But let’s face it- most of our money just kind of disappears after about five trips to Chick-fil-a every week.

Being tight on money does not mean you can’t be entertained musically. Here are five local bands that are good and fun to watch while not breaking your (piggy) bank.

1. Dinnertime

Dinnertime is an up-and-coming band that my musically-inclined brother describes as "Harmony-Heavy throwback pop with fantastic hooks and lyrics". Their kind of music is one to be played in the car with your windows down. If you want more info, check out their website: https://dinnertime.bandcamp.com/.

2. Pinkest

They describe themselves as “space baby rock." If you aren’t sure what that means, be sure to take a listen to their bandcamp. It gives a vintage rocker vibe, and definitely a contender. They are also super fun to watch on stage- the last venue they played was called His Rock, and it was very exciting to see the energy they conveyed on stage, as well as a fun audience.

3. The Callous Douboys

Yes, they may be sued for their particularly clever name if they get famous, but this band is fresh and has a lot to offer in the rock/metal genre. Their next gig is March 17 at the Masquerade.

4. Flower

Emo may not be the most popular genre anymore, but it still has its followers, the band Flower being a popular one to Atlanta youths. A detailed article on how the band gets its inspiration and sound can be found here. Maybe Emo isn’t your cup of tea, but this band and their new album Waste of Life is pretty promising, and you can listen to it here, follow them @floweratl (Facebook, Soundcloud, Twitter) or @floweratlanta (Instagram) or check out their website.

5. Kudzu Kids

Along with Emo, this is a band with an Indie Rock spin on it for all you hipsters out there. Give their album Adolescence a try here. Or look at their Facebook page for more info on upcoming releases and tour dates!

If you haven’t heard these bands before, definitely give them a listen and see what kind of local bands you would like to support. They have all gained recognition in the world of ATL bands, and they all similarly perform at venues such as The Masquerade, Under the Couch, Mammal Gallery, and the Arcade. So maybe you don’t have to spend $100 on every concert you want to go to, and would rather pay less than ten bucks for a ticket. It’s a great opportunity to have fun, explore a new culture of Atlanta, and support our local bands.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
