Living With A Music Major

It is a great experience!

Living With A Music Major

Before you decide to live with a music major, there are a few key things that you should know. Living with (and being) a music major is wonderful, however, there will be many things that a non-music major would not expect.

1. We will be up doing homework until the last hour of each day and continue to do homework into the next day. Since we take 16 classes for 19 credits and 17 different ensembles, we literally have no time to do homework until the end of the day.

2. We need to practice. A lot. And we don't always want to go to a practice room. Sometimes it is nice to play in our pajamas instead of putting on real clothes and walking across campus to a practice room. So please understand that. We aren't practicing to annoy you.

3. We might sing in our sleep! Sometimes the music just keeps happening.

4. Our homework includes singing and playing. So we will have to do that while working on homework. We can't be silent while practicing our homework all of the time. But we will be respectful and make sure we don't sing and clap for six hours straight.

5. If we aren't in the room, we are most likely at rehearsal or practicing. Again, we practice a lot. Rehearsals take up a majority amount of our 'free time'. Then before and after rehearsals we have to practice for our next rehearsal. Repeat.

6. Yes, we will drive to rehearsals that are 90 minutes away and get back at 12:30am and still wake up for out 8am the next morning. That's what we are passionate about and that is what we are going to do. It is all about networking in the music world. We take every opportunity that is given to us and use it to our advantage.

7. We own a lot of black clothing. When I say a lot, I mean A LOT. Like more than half of our wardrobe is most likely going to be black. Since we are always performing, we need to have a concert ready outfit at a moments notice. We never know when an opportunity might arise!

8. We analyze every piece of music we hear. Whether it is a song playing on the radio or a concerto with an orchestra, we are thinking very hard about it.

9. We hate when people call a piece a song. It is not a song. It is a piece. End of story!

10. We are loyal and loving and appreciate that you want to put up with us. We might not always be there to show our gratitude, but we want to say a big thank you.

Living with a music major is great, so find your favorite music major and join in!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
