Alright, so I've never been married before. I know, half of my credibility is gone, right? However, my kitten and I just moved into a new apartment together this week, and I'm pretty sure that the two are pretty synonymous. Things are pretty serious between us, now, and we've got to get used to living with each other if we're going to make this work. This is the epiphany that has been my past week as I took my relationship with my cat to the next level.
You start out in the honeymoon stage -- you love them, and they love you. We're starting a new chapter in our lives together! While getting each of your things set up and unpacked, all you can do is think about all of the new memories you're going to make here.
But you start to learn that not everything is happy all of the time. You start to see that your companion isn't as perfect as you thought they were. You see all of their worst habits: how whiny they are when they're hungry or even steal your food (the horror), how they take up all of the space on the bed. They wake you up at the most unfavorable (I'm being respectful here) hours and don't accommodate you and your schedule at all.
You get nothing done. Ever. Either because they're just so cute and you spend your whole day together on the couch watching Netflix or because they're just in the way. It's a gamble.
You get angry, sometimes. And more often than not, you can hold it in. But on occasion, you snap. You say some things you don't mean. And then you feel terrible about it and spend the next few days trying to make it up to them with gifts, fancy dinners and endless affection. Eventually, they'll give in. It'll be OK. All relationships have bumps in the road.
After a while, you only get cuddled on rare occasions. Lucky occasions when they're not being a brat. They avoid you a lot and then demand attention at the weirdest times as if your needs don't even matter. All of the love is on their schedule, not yours. However, through all of that you realize that your life would be a lot worse if they weren't around making it kind of miserable.
