Do you live in a suburb of a suburb of a big city (yes, you read that right)? Do you know what it is really like to live in a small town? Let's take a quick look!
All the local grocery stores are right down the street. Picking up milk before dinner takes about 10 minutes out of your day. Your friends are a bike ride away. Grandma and Grandpa are a couple blocks away (and those cookies are the best). There are one or two schools in the town located within walking distance. The only entertainment in town is a local bar with a bowling alley connected to it. But what about everything else?
The hospitals take at least a half hour to get to if not more (so don't get seriously injured). The big grocery stores like Walmart, Meijer, Woodman's or Piggly Wiggly are a trip to get groceries for the month to stock up on. Any schools that have a meet for sports, parents will have to drive at least an hour to get to the other school to watch their children compete. Anytime you and your friends want to go spend a couple hours shopping at the mall, it turns into a full day trip. If you're into music then going to a concert means getting a hotel and making a vacation of it.
Most people in town have the same cell service because there is only one cell tower even remotely close. When you go into a big city, that is the one time you don't have service.
You know everyone's business, whether you want to or not. Word spreads fast in a small town. Friends gossip, parents gossip, everyone gossips. There are no secrets in a small town.
You are known as someone's granddaughter or grandson, not by your name. "Hi, I'm Carley!" "Oh, you mean Carole's granddaughter?" Yeah, that's me...
You and your friends are the closest anyone could be. There's not a ton of you in one group, but enough to have a small baseball game in the backyard. You will have forever friends living in a small town. These bonds can never be broken. Memories that will last a lifetime that no one will ever be able to come close to experiencing.
That small town is home and even though you may leave, it will always be there for you to return to. Living miles away or remaining there, cherish the memories and moments left because one day it won't be the same as when you grew up. Life changes, buildings get torn down, new technology is put in, and those small towns will one day become random big cities.
