WARNING: AGGERVATING INFORMATION LIES AHEAD.
Every year new students come to Kennesaw State University with hope and desire in their eyes for a great year, and one of the things that stop them is housing. This will be my third year as a student, and it has been the one situation that I hate dealing with. Being a student, there are four housing options for everyone: 1. Live on campus in student housing, 2. Live off campus in student housing, 3. Rent an apartment with a couple of roommates, or 4. Rent a house with a couple of roommates. While all of these options have great pros, they all, for lack of a better word, SUCK, and here is why.
On-Campus Student Housing: While all of the amenities they offer and the convince is nice- the price isn’t. My first year at Kennesaw I moved into University Village, which is a four bedroom/bathroom dorm room.
I lived with three other roommates; we had a washer and dryer, a living area with couches, and a fully equipped kitchen that was any freshman’s dream come true. We were able to have people over whenever we wanted and make food in our room, whereas if you lived in the Village Suites, or on virtually any other college campus, you wouldn’t be able too.
The downfall of it all- the rent. You have to pay $625 a month, which means that I paid $7,500 a year, and so did my three other roommates. All together we paid $30,000 for my one dorm room alone.
There were eight other rooms on my hall paying the same amount, but they got $240,000. When you moved up in floors, the price got higher and higher. I would be okay with the prices we all paid if there was something to show for it.
Yes, we only had to pay one bill a month, but you are going to tell me that four girls used enough electricity, water, and gas along with my extended basic cable and spotty Wi-Fi to pay $2,500 a month?
Not only that, but they raise the prices every single year without batting an eye. Why is it that a school that has been branded as an affordable university, makes living on campus cost just as much as tuition? If the system doesn’t change its course, nobody will be able to pay to live on campus or want to for that matter.
Each week for the next month there will be a new installment in the series of Living At Kennesaw. It will take you a little deeper into what the situations really look like and how each situation is dealt with. Until next week, "May the odds be ever in your favor."
