Living Far From Home

Who wants to see their parents every weekend anyway?

Recently, I had a friend who asked me why I moved from California to New York because it was "so far away." I responded, "who cares if it is far away?"

It seems that many of us in this generation are afraid of change, of new things, and new environments. We have conditioned ourselves to be comfortable in the place where we grew up, which is where ever home is. I say get out of where you live when you go to college. Don't stay in the same place and live the same routine only 20 minutes away from your house, go to a completely new place that you have never even been to. A move like that enables you to grow in a different way and have a more broad perspective on life.

So if you want to go to a school that's in Wyoming, or Maine, or even in Europe, then go, because your college years are the days that you are able to explore new places and meet new people. You'll never have an opportunity like this until you are making bank and are able to afford a vacation and time off from your job.

I think that the time that you have in college is very valuable, and you should make the most of it while you can. Four years is a short time out of your whole life. Some people our age are afraid of going outside of their comfort zone because they have an odd notion that whatever they do is going to be for forever. No, you will not be gone forever, it is only four years including holidays and summer so in reality it is quite a short time being away, but trust me, it is worth it.

I never thought I would end up in New York, but I did and I ended up loving it more than California, and now I never want to go back! Its even a struggle for me to visit home over the holidays, because I would rather be in New York.

Now, I'm not saying that every student will feel the same about their place of their university, but where ever that is, you should make the most of it and embrace the different culture that this environment has than your home town. Who knows, maybe you'll come to love it so much it may become your home for the rest of your life.

I never thought I would be craving Dunkin Donuts on the reg, but two years into this I've become that person. In the end, its all up to you where you decide to go. Just make sure that where ever you end up that you make the most to get the full experience because four years flies by, and this portion of your life will only be a blip compared to the rest of the things you are going to go through in life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
