Living Life As A Curly Girl

It's harder than it looks...

Living Life As A Curly Girl

Since I was very little, I've been self conscious about my curly hair. Growing up in a town where most girls had pretty, silky, straight hair, I wanted to be like them. It was a time where Disney Princesses and Barbies were my idol, and "being popular" actually kind of mattered.

My best friend growing up had the most beautiful blonde hair I've ever seen, it was straight and thin. Next to her, I felt like a big lumpy meatball, just rolling along side of her wherever she went.

And even now, I don't feel comfortable with it. I'm sure other "curly girls" would agree, dealing with curly hair isn't easy. In fact, it can be an absolute pain in the butt. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning and take a look at my hair, I just want to hide under a rock and never go outside ever again.

And you know what? The media really doesn't help with our image of ourselves either. Every "pretty" girl in the movies or TV shows have the perfect Caucasian hair. She's the lead. She gets the guy. While the curly girl... well, she's the sidekick at best.

And so, we let ourselves feel like this. We, or at least I, assume the role of the stereotypical curly headed girl (as portrayed in the media). We live life without calling too much attention to ourselves.

But why? Why do I feel compelled to do this to myself? I doubt others see me the way. In fact, I get compliments on my hair all of the time. People saying how "jealous" they are of my curls, wishing they had hair half as thick as mine. I never take the compliment, but rather brush it away by saying something along the lines of, "Don't say that, you'd never want hair like mine". I'm not good at taking compliments in general, but if it's about my hair, I am even worse about it.

I probably shouldn't do this. I should take the compliment, because yes, my hair did take a lot of time to do today, thank you very much.

So, to get that compliment and to not feel like a complete meatball, I have tried so many products, it's ridiculous. For the sake of helping out a fellow curly girl, here's a list of some products I have found to be quite amazing; they smell good, feel good, and all that jazz:
  • DevaCurl Set It Free hairspray- A great leave-in moisturizing spray for extra shine and extra bounce to your curls.
  • DevaCurl Styling Cream - Protects you from that evil villain (frizz), and holds your hair all nice and together.

  • Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie - This wonderfully smelling hair "smoothie" helps define curls ( I love it for those frustrating little frizzies at the crown of the head).
  • Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner- Could be used as a leave in or wash out, this makes my hair silky smooth when I brush it out.

Well, I hope that I've helped you somewhat. I'll just leave with a few parting words: don't be afraid to be curly. Completely curly! Embrace what you have, because your curls make you interesting, they make you fierce. They can make you whatever you want to be, a superhero, the lead, a beautiful princess--you!

Curl on, ladies.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
