This summer, I moved into my first off campus apartment, and so far I have learned a lot of things, but chiefly among them is how to get internet access when you don't have Wi-Fi in your home. With expenses like paying for my phone, electric, gas, and water alongside rent, my girlfriend and I agreed that the added expense of Wi-Fi was a luxury we could not afford.
However, not having Wi-Fi in the home has allowed us to get a bit creative when it comes to getting internet access and keeping ourselves entertained at home.
If you find yourself living somewhere without Wi-Fi, here are ways you can still stay connected and keep yourself entertained without internet.
1. Go to a library.
Libraries are often forgotten nowadays, but they can be very helpful when you are living a no-Wi-Fi life. Most libraries have Wi-Fi in them that you can access if you bring your laptop in with you, and if they don't (or you don't have a laptop) they usually have computers you can use for free.
Also, books are cool too.
2. Go to the mall.
Every mall I have been to in recent years offers free Wi-Fi to their patrons, and there are often individual Wi-Fi networks offered by stores in the mall! So, take your laptop to the mall, find a common seating area, and sit and enjoy the Wi-Fi.
3. Go to a cafe or coffee shop.
Most coffee shops these days offer free Wi-Fi to their patrons, even the small, local ones! So, while this option is a little less free than some other free Wi-Fi options, go to a cafe or coffee shop, order a drink and/or snack and relax with some Wi-Fi time.
4. Adult coloring.
So, in my time without Wi-Fi, one of my go-to favorite pastimes has become adult coloring books. Buy yourself a coloring book, a set of markers and/or colored pencils, and you can keep yourself entertained for hours.
5. Gaming.
There a lot of phone games that you can play that don't require internet access and are highly addictive. Also, if you have a gaming console like I do, internet access may enhance some games you have, but there are a lot of games that you can play off Wi-Fi either solo or with friends.
6. Movies.
While Netflix is awesome, the DVD is not dead. I happen to have quite an extensive DVD collection, but if you are someone who has solely relied on Netflix for watching things, don't fear! You can rent movies at a Redbox, or you can start your own movie collection with the $5 (or less) movie sections at Target and Walmart.
7. Read.
As I said before, books are cool and they are totally internet free. So, settle down with that one book you've had forever and were waiting for just the perfect time to read, re-read a favorite book series of yours, or pick up a new and interesting book from a book store or library.
