Why Being Spontaneous is a Good Thing

Spontaneous: spon - ta - ne - ous — having an open, natural, and uninhibited manner.

There are tons of people out there who dislike spontaneous people. Spontaneity is an acquired taste. Perhaps this is because they like routine, and lets face it, "routine" is not really in a spontaneous person's vocabulary. With spontaneity comes surprises, and not all people like surprise. Another reason some might not like spontaneous people is because they themselves are jealous of one's spontaneous ways. Spontaneous people follow their heart. Maybe non-spontaneous people want to be spontaneous and want to follow their heart, but worry to much about the repercussions of events in order to do so.

I would categorize myself as half-spontaneous. I have done many things in a moment of spontaneity—such as getting a tattoo—and have not regretted one of those spontaneous decisions. If anything, I wish I were a tad more spontaneous. I always have more fun if I just let go a little and live.

Imagine the amazing stories you would be able to tell from a random, unplanned road trip with a friend, asking out the guy or girl you have been crushing on, or even doing something as permanent as getting a tattoo. The possibilities are endless, and here is why you should add a little spontaneity into your life.

1. It lets you discover what you really love

Think you have your life plan figured out? Maybe you do and nothing will ever make you change your mind. Maybe you think you do, but one spontaneous decision to go volunteer at an animal shelter one day may forever change your mind and make you want to do something else. Even if your experiences don't make you change your mind, you might find out something you really, really wouldn't want to do.

2. Learn to problem solve

Lets face it, bumps in the road happen. Especially during unplanned adventures. Spontaneity helps you learn how to deal with unforeseen problems that might occur. In turn, this might help you manage stress better. If you learn how to problem solve and cope during stressful situations, you can bring those skills into your day-to-day living.

3. You'll never wonder "if"

So many adults talk about those "if" moments and what would have happened if they had just kissed the girl or gone to that party. Spontaneous people will not look back on their lives and have to think about those "if" moments. They will know exactly what happened.

I don't want to look back on my life and have those "I wonder if" moments. I want to look back at my life and feel fulfilled because I did everything that I wanted to do. I followed my heart.

All in all, being spontaneous is neither a good or bad thing. Some people love their routines and order and wouldn't want it any other way. Truth be told, spontaneous people do have more fun. Live in the moment. Live your life. Live.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
