Have you ever imagined fitting every single item you owned into a backpack? I'm sure if you think about all the things you have now, you might not even be able to fit everything into ten suitcases. Living from a backpack doesn't have to be a lifestyle choice, but have you ever traveled somewhere for maybe two weeks and worried about how much you brought with you?
So how is it possible and what items do you bring? Well, luckily there are a plethora of YouTube videos with a variety of people all showing what they pack in their bag. Here are the most common items to pack in your travel backpack.
1. Electronics and chargers
The first thing you are going to need as a minimalist is your essential technology. Oftentimes, if you are living from a backpack it means you are traveling a lot. Maybe you have camera gear you need. You can't forget your music so pack an iPod (one tiny square iPod with no screen will do you just fine I promise). Minimalism is not about being cut off from society, it's about living with less so don't forget you will still need a phone and possibly a laptop. It's also a good idea to bring a rechargeable bank for your phone; you don't want to be backpacking in the middle of nowhere and have your phone die when you need it most.
2. Toiletries
A razor, toothbrush and toothpaste, mouthwash, soap, nail clippers and lotion are all essentials. Girls, you may also want to throw in hair ties and bobby pins. The most important thing to remember with this category is that none of the products you have need to be full sized. If the shampoo you have to buy doesn't come in a smaller bottle, buy one and only bring a travel size bottle with you.
3. Clothing
Obviously, you will need a change of clothes eventually, however, there are certain things to keep in mind with this. You need at least one outfit meant for every weather condition you might run into. T-shirts may be the easiest to pack, but just imagine it getting a bit cold and all you have is short sleeves. Shoes can also go into this category, and there are two types of shoes to bring. One pair for leisure activities and one for harder, work-like activities. And of course, don't forget to pack a reasonable amount of socks and underwear.
4. Documents
If you are traveling, chances are you need a passport. You are also going to need money. Those items, along with any other documents or paperwork you may need, should be kept inside a Ziploc bag to save them from the elements. The last thing you want is it raining on you and soaking into your bag and then having to say goodbye to those papers.
5. Extra supplies
The things you throw in your bag as you are heading out the door are going to need things like a spork for eating, maybe a couple of extra towels, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, a notebook and pens. Anything you may want/need but have the room for. However, you don't want to end up weighing yourself down so just because you have extra space in your bag doesn't mean you have to fill it up with anything and everything you can find.
No matter where you are going or what you're doing, living out of a backpack is an adventure in itself. Maybe you'll find that it's not something you are interested in, or maybe it'll be a road to self discovery. Whatever it is to you, it's always good to try something new.
