Misophonia translates into the hatred of sound. You may have a friend who hates noises or you yourself may hate noises. Never fear you are not alone. There are several people in the world who suffer from this tragic condition.
When a person suffers from misophonia they get easily angered when triggered by sound. It is normally chewing, smacking, or tapping. A normal person would just ignore these sounds but a person with miso can not help but to focus on that one sound. After about five seconds of hearing the sound the person with miso has already started to get angry. The person doesn't mean to and they can not help it. They hate themselves for thinking the most awful things. It is the worst thing in the world not being able to control what they think.
If you are a friend of a person who has miso it can be very difficult to always help them out. They may give you weird looks when your eating or even breathing but they don't mean to do it. They have a hard time understanding misophonia themselves. It is important to remember that they can not help anything. It is not funny when you mess with them by making noises just to trigger them. They may laugh and joke around but on the inside they are thinking the worst things and they really do not want to think that was bout a friend.
I have suffered for about five years and it is the hardest thing I have ever had to live with. I had a friend who was wondering what was wrong with me and he did some research to find what it was and he found the term misaphonia, since then I have done research to see if there is a cure or something that will lessen the anger when I am triggered. So far I have found nothing to help. There are doctors that will diagnose it but they do not have anyway of treating it.
There are support groups on Facebook that people with misaphonia can join. I found it relieving to join the group because I learned I was not the only one out there who has misaphonia. People on the group like to share there triggers and talk about how they feel. The also like to talk about their success stories and events that they have overcome.
There is not a lot of information available and a lot of people do not know how to handle this condition. We can not ask people to stop living their lives. There are a lot of good noise canceling products that help when in situations we can not escape. If you or a loved one suffers from misaphonia I suggest doing as much research as you can so you know what you are up against. Hopefully one day there will be a way to stop the triggers but until then please chew with your mouth closed.
