Having younger siblings has so many ups and downs that it sometimes is hard to know which is happening. Sometimes it feels like having a lost puppy dog you didn't sign up for, but more often than not, it's having your best friend(s) readily available. My younger sisters are the biggest blessings in my life.
Regardless of what I do, where I am in life, and how utterly horribly I've messed up, they are always there for me. This is the part of the family I know will always be there for me without a doubt. From coming home past curfew with disapproving judgments by my parents to giving a bit too much of an attitude, nobody is there to defend me quicker than them. Unless, of course, it's one of those days where they'd like to throw me under the bus and watch me suffer, but only because I probably deserved it. Other than that, there's nobody I'd rather confide in when I'm having a bad day.
Quality sibling bonding time is one of the most important parts of family life. I know I'll never have to go on an impromptu food run alone because it's the perfect opportunity to learn more about each other and hang out for a little bit. This quality time together is one of the things that keeps me going when the going gets rough. I'd be lost without pure, unadulterated advice from the people that share most of the same DNA. If anything, the biological similarity tears the facade of "it's okay" away and turns it into "you really need to get it together." Everything is honest and true to the core.
The time spent with my little sisters isn't always about going to get food or going shopping. Sometimes it's about curling up under a blanket while watching a movie. Even in the middle of the night, waking up at 3 am when it's really dark and a little bit scary, there's somebody right down the hall to cuddle up next to and stay safe with. Nobody keeps the boogeyman away like a loving sister.
Sometimes, if you're as lucky as I am, you'll have someone following in your footsteps. Imitating the clothes you wear, your makeup, even the hobbies and extracurriculars you did through high school. This doesn't always happened, but I was blessed with a little sister that ended up doing just that. Unfortunately, she also adopted the attitude I had back then along with the rest. Imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but it is a hundred times sweeter coming from a sibling.
She's the reason I have motivation to do well in life. I have people to set examples for. I don't want her to make the same mistakes I have, while simultaneously keeping her in the dark about some of it. Having people to set an example for is such a positive thing in my life. It's kept me from quitting multiple things, gotten me to pass that impossible class, and even got me to spend a little more time cooking dinner so it wasn't disappointing.
Last but not least, you're never alone. That's a bold statement. We all have days where we feel unloved, alone, and sad. Having such loving little sisters fixes that immediately. They would drop anything to help me out, as I would for them. Sometimes they seem like blessings in disguise because they can get on my nerves and make me want to pull my hair out. But most of all, above anything else, they're my rocks. Undeniably the best part of my life is being born into a family with them.
Never forget to make these people in your life feel appreciated. Always remember to return the favors that they've done for you. Be the blessing they have been for you.
