A Letter To My Little Brother

I can't believe you are all grown up.

Dear little brother,

You're not so little anymore considering you're taller than me. It wasn't always like that, you know. I used to be the tall one, and you would always ask me to reach for things on the top shelves. But those days are long gone.

I'm writing you this letter because even though we aren't that close, I'm still your big sister and I still care about you. Yeah, sure, we barely talk. I'm away at college and you're a senior in high school. We live different lives. But it's the fact that you're a senior in high school that I feel the need to write this. You graduate in 6 months -- HALF A YEAR. That blows my mind. It feels like just yesterday you were playing in the sandbox, wearing your Bob the Builder outfit, and now you're applying to colleges.

Here's some sisterly advice: You don't have to figure out your life plan by tomorrow. Heck you don't have to have it figured out in two years. When I was standing in your shoes two years ago, I never thought I'd end up at the college I did, pursuing the major I currently am working towards. That's something I wish I had realized sooner -- things are constantly changing. You can not expect plans to always turn out exactly how you want. Don't get me wrong, you can't put off making big decisions forever. You will have to pick a college, and eventually a major. But those decisions aren't permanent.

I know I'm not around anymore to really be there for you, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to help you in any way I can. As a big sister, it's my duty to make sure that you don't screw your life up. I need to make sure that you are heading down the right road. And as of now, I think you're heading in the right direction.

I think it's safe to say that we are both on two separate paths when it comes to life. I'm moving on and away from home, and I think you'll end up settling down in the town we were raised. There's nothing wrong with that. This town offers you what you need to live a happy life, and I'm happy about that. Sadly, I think the distance between us will double in the next two years. But that doesn't change the fact that you are my little brother and I love you. I'm always going to have your back.

-- Your big sis

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
