Most people these days can agree on one thing, today’s society is hard to live in. We are fighting a social civil war of the likes that we’ve never seen. If you take a step out your door, or open Facebook, and see everyone fighting each other for some reason or another, but why? The reason we are crumbling as a whole is one simple reason: young people have no respect.
People don’t have respect for one another anymore. Social media allows for people to say whatever they want, whenever they want with little to no ramifications. Recently while scrolling through my feed I saw a quick blurb about a parent that staged a mock arrest for their child who had been acting out. I took a glance at some of the comments and they ranged from total support to anger for the parent. These people were able to judge the parent without knowing anything of the family. People in the past had respect for each other and allowed parents to bring up their children as they wanted without thousands of people adding their comments in.
Millennials have been taught about why tolerance is so important, but with forcing people to become tolerant, it opens more space for intolerance. Being able to say anything gives people the feeling of almost invincibility, but no respect for others. Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all.
Who is to blame for all of this? Is it social media? The generation that raised us? Who's to say, but all that matters is it’s time for a reality check. Time for everyone to step back and reevaluate everything. To have one day where black, white, flag haters, flag fighters, heterosexual, transexual, gay, and everyone else get along and just have a shred of respect for one another would be incredible and teach everyone something.
