As hour six approached, I was quickly becoming “over-it”. I was over the glaring invasion of personal space, cramped legs with nowhere to stretch, packaged Arabian meals, and the perpetual intermediate between exhaustion and inability to sleep. And the crazy part was, I was just halfway there.
For the past few years, my dad’s job has allowed him the opportunity to live in Abu Dhabi. I was elated when we arranged my trip to visit him this year over spring break. Sun, sightseeing, and sand- what else could I want?
I can tell you what I did not want: a 13-hour plane ride.
For some people, plane rides are magical moments where time freezes and binge watching TV is acceptable. Flight attendants are cousins to unicorns who graciously serve your every need and a handsome prince always fills the seat next to you. For others, plane rides can be a gruesome journey of poor food and relentless claustrophobia.
Don’t get me wrong, this is nothing personal against the airline. However, no matter how polite and devoted the flight attendants are, or how many great movies are available at your fingertips, 13 hours is a painfully long time.
Somewhere between watching Wild and Crazy Stupid Love as we flew over Moscow I started making a list of things to remember for the trip home. The next time you’re faced with a lengthy flight, follow these tips for a more enjoyable experience.
- Pack less. I immediately assumed the only way I could ever survive a flight to the Middle East was with the company of every item I’ve ever owned in my entire life. My book bag was stuffed with several books, all of my favorite magazines, my laptop, ample amounts of pens, a notebook, DVDs, headphones, snacks…you name it, I had it. The reality was: the amount of effort it took to get each item out of my bag during the flight was absolutely not worth it. Bring a tote bag just big enough for a laptop, latest Cosmo, the New York Times, and a good book. You don’t need all the rest- trust me.
- Sleep essentials are, well, essential. Etihad Airways provided each guest with small packs consisting of toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, ear buds, and a sleeping mask. If your airline does not provide this, definitely invest in some of these amenities. A sleep mask is perfect when your neighbor is devouring a book beside you while you try to catch some z’s.
- Pack healthy snacks. Sitting for several hours will not necessarily leave you starving, but it will leave you bored. If you get the tendency to snack then it is nice to have a stash of healthy snacks aboard your flight. Airplane food is never delicious and if you think you won’t be able to eat it, definitely consider bringing a meal purchased at your terminal.
I shouldn’t be complaining; I arrived safely and on time without any issues at all. I hope all of you world travelers have the best trip.
Bon voyage!
