Writing is often thought of as a solitary occupation, and it’s true we writers spend a lot of time alone. However, we write so people can read our writing, inherently creating a community. In short, if you’re writing or reading, you’re a literary
citizen. The excitement lies in being a good one. But what's the big idea and why is it important?
Here are four ways one can be a good literary citizen in the grand scheme of things.
Let your creative juices out.
Self expression is one of the most important things. In writing, we are allowed to express our thoughts, feelings, and opinions, whether you choose to write academically or creatively. Prose, poetry, a research paper, or a journal all do the trick. Put it down on paper and share it for others to see. Your voice is authentic and worth being heard!
Put your money where it counts, or put your mouth where the money would be.
If we want there to be outlets for literary forms, we need to buy the magazines and support the publishers that are out there. I'm sure we can agree that although there are countless mediums for articles, such as this platform and many others, unfortunately there are less and less outlets for more creative writing.
Go out and buy a book or subscribe to your favorite literary journal. Support the community!
There are other ways to support the book industry, however, even if you’re flat broke. Recommend books on your Twitter or Facebook feed. Visit your local library and check out books to read. Go to readings of local writers—it's supportive to be in the audience asking questions or just listening.
Flattery is a wonderful thing.
When you read something you like, contact that person and tell them you liked it, especially emerging writers. It can be that simple. Everyone likes compliments!
Establish your own literary community.
Rejoice in others’ successes! This one can be challenging for those of us who are prone to a bit of envy. But try to remember that every best-selling literary novel means that more people are likely to read. Gather
a group of other writers and readers, and share your work. Give feedback, and recommend works of interest.
If you participate in all or one of these four tips, you are all being active citizens and encouraging a community that celebrates all voices and creative expression! Go give it a shot.
