I am all for celebrating the season one holiday at a time. I too get frustrated when I see stores put out their Christmas decorations before Halloween is even over. (Hello, I would like to be able to find some Thanksgiving-themed tablecloths and window stickies during November instead of August!) Plus I think overlooking Thanksgiving is absolutely horrible. We as humans really need to spend more time being thankful for what we have and less time complaining about buying Christmas gifts. So let me go on record as having made it clear that I truly feel that the holidays have gotten too commercialized and have started to appear way too early.
That being said, why can't we start listening to Christmas music now? It is not like I am asking everyone to set up their tree complete with the angel on top and decorate their entire yard with lights on November 1. I am just talking strictly about music here. Before you get mad, hear me out. I know so many people who always push for doing "whatever makes you happy" -- whether that is wearing those comfy (but hideous) pants, eating the extra grilled cheese or taking a midday nap. So if Christmas music is what makes me happy, why can't I turn it on any time I want to? I see no difference between those weird pants and this music. The time of year does not make me like my favorite pants any more or less, and it definitely does not make me like Christmas music any more or less. If it makes me happy, I want the freedom to do it at any time without being bombarded by complaints from other people.
I understand why stores probably should not play it yet. They do not often play heavy metal or rap for the same reason -- it is just not everyone's thing -- and that is fine. I also understand why they should not have their decorations out yet either. We just are not there yet. However, I do not think anyone has the right to be mad about what is in my headphones. It does not affect anyone but me. In fact, no one else even has to hear it! So the next time I share that I have had Christmas music on for the past two weeks, instead of looking at me like I sprouted a unicorn horn, choose to be happy for me that I have been doing something that I truly enjoy. Always remember to do what makes you happiest, too!
