John Mark McMillan is one of my favorite artists. I grew up listening to the Charlotte-based musician’s work. And even though I’ve probably listened to his songs hundreds of times, they never get old. Each and every song has a lyrical and musical depth which is difficult to rival. His songs are just as captivating the first time as the 100th. Every time I listen to his songs, I come away with something new.
John Mark simultaneously draws on the influences of his southern roots and artists like Bruce Springsteen to create music which defies all labels. His deep, earthy voice booms and echoes powerfully, creating a profound sense of awe and wonder in every song. More poetic than anything, his lyrics are always raw and honest to their core.
And while he isn’t shy about the very personal nature of his faith, McMillan isn’t frightened by his questions either. His songs often have an intended double meaning, at once extolling God and exhorting the Church. His music is refreshing and challenging.
Good music, like McMillan's, should require intense reflection and encourage greater devotion. In fact, because of their depth, I have often wondered if John Mark McMillan’s soaring worship anthems and tender devotionals will not one day be classic hymns known by every believer.
