Here’s to the guy who reminds me to be myself. The guy who is half of the entire foundation I grew upon. Here’s to the man who raised me and changed me, and never ever questioned me. Now here are just a few things I have learned from him:
Change is okay.
Not only is change okay, but it's necessary--and it’s best to be the protagonist in that change. Sometimes what used to make you happy simply doesn’t anymore, as change often entails. But don’t just let that change happen to you- be an active player in it. Make that change your own and form it to suit you and your future in the happiest way possible.
Go with the flow (to an extent).
Sometimes your kids might leave a couple beer cans around, and that’s okay to chuckle about it and then let the discipline fall into place accordingly. It’s okay to not strategize every moment, and instead take a chill pill, live, and then pick up on the decision making when you’re ready.
Follow your passion.
Take that job that might move you to a new state. Do what makes you happy and make that your priority. Don’t worry too much about the money or the material comfort. Focus more on the abstract, the happiness, the passion.
Be the friend people need you to be--all in good time.
Listen to people. Give them the best advice you can when they ask for it. Put your ego aside when people need you the most. But also--remember to keep up with that necessary balance and look after yourself. Moderation is key!
Let go and let live.
Sometimes your daughter moves out, grows up a bit more, and is swept off to college. Sometimes your son is taller, wiser, and heading off to high school. One can only imagine how scary it is to watch as your muses begin to paint themselves. It is during this time when the best lesson any parent can teach is the one that is taught by example. It is the lesson that it is okay to step back, and watch as your previous lessons work their magic as your children make them their own.
I appreciate this guy on Father’s Day and every day. Thank you for the ever-lengthening list of lessons and the bundle of knowledge I use everyday.
