With the Democrats upsetting loss to the Republicans in the Presidential race, many people are already looking to 2020 to field potential presidential candidates. The primaries will be interesting with a young sect of the Democratic Party that has turned more progressive compared to the more establishment side. The primaries will also be interesting because there aren’t many Democrats with the national profile and name recognition that Hillary Clinton did in 2016. With that being said, here are the top five potential Democrats for President in 2020.
1. Tim Kaine
Senator Tim Kaine was Hillary Clinton’s VP pick and as a result grew his national profile. This makes him a likely candidate in 2020. Also, Clinton supporters may see Kaine as a continuation of Clinton’s campaign into 2020. Although he represents a more establishment side of the DNC, he may have a good shot in 2020 solely because of the name recognition he received in 2020.
2. Bernie Sanders
Senator Bernard Sanders is another likely candidate to run again. Sanders represents a more progressive side of the DNC and had many supporters of a younger age. His national profile and supporters from 2016 may be able to boost him to the DNC nomination in 2020. His age, however, may prohibit him from running in 2020. If that is the case, Elizabeth Warren may be an alternative.
3. Elizabeth Warren
The firebrand progressive Senator has also been heavily talked about for a potential run in 2020. She’s often seen as a progressive alternative to Sanders if he does not run. She and Sanders work closely together on similar issues, and as a result, her name recognition has gone up. She was also talked about as a potential VP candidate which put her in some headlines. She will likely represent the progressives of the Democratic party in 2020.
4. Julian Castro
Julian Castro was appointed by President Obama to head up the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was heavily talked about as a potential VP candidate. He may be able to leverage his federal experience and record to a successful run in 2020. However, his lack of real national name recognition may be a hindrance.
5. Cory Booker
Cory Booker is the Senator from New Jersey. Recent moves have hinted at a potential run in 2020. Some pundits have equated Cory Booker to Barack Obama. His twitter social media presence rivals Trump’s and he may have the ability to appeal to both young people and the more establishment Democrats. If he can polish up his resume over the next four years, he may have what it takes to clinch the Democratic nomination in 2020.
