Sometimes throughout our lives we have a strong belief that something will happen or work out the way we expect it to. But often we get our hopes dashed. These expectations could be large-scale, like the direction our relationships or careers should be going in, or small-scale, like expecting our dad to make us our favorite meal for dinner on a particular night. The only way to avoid disappointment is to never have expectations, which is unrealistic. The best we can do to improve our happiness is to
manage our expectations. Here is a list of typical day-to-day letdowns that we just have to accept as a part of life.
1. Burning your toast in the toaster oven.
2. Burning your popcorn in the microwave.
3. Burning your marshmallow in the bonfire.
4. Food getting stuck in vending machines leaving you cheated out of a delicious candy bar.
5. Discovering that every single pair of tights you own has holes.
6. When you put a quarter in a gumball machine and a purple gumball comes rolling out.
7. When you go on vacation and it rains the entire time.
8. Losing your Wi-Fi connection.
9. Eating the last chip in the bag and then reaching in to find it empty.
10. Growing out of/ripping your favorite pair of jeans.
11. Finding out Santa Claus isn't real.
12. The series finale of "Lost."
However, as Rashida Jones once said, "I know that in life there will be sickness, devastation, disappointments, heartache -- it's a given. What's not a given is the way you choose to get through it all. If you look hard enough, you can always find the bright side."
