Whenever I tell people a story involving my sister, the first thing people say is normally, "You have a sister??" Yes, yes I do. My sister is 13 years older than me, but when we are together, you can't tell the age difference...probably because we both act like we're five years old.
When siblings have such a large age gap like we do, they don't tend to be very close. I think I can speak for both of us when I say I don't think that is the case for us. My sister was my first friend, and that's a bond that's unbreakable.
When I was little, my dad worked first shift and my dad worked second shift. When my mom would take her daily shower at around 1:00, my sister and I would sneak into my parents' room and eat all of the Fruit Roll Ups from the stash that wasn't hidden well. Occasionally, my sister would paint my nails using this dark blue nail polish that had Tweety Bird on the bottle. These are probably the earliest memories I have of my times with my sister.
I remember she had a lot of Mariah Carey posters on her walls, and she would let me watch Daria with her...even though that show was a bit old for me. Then, we would watch Zoom and Zoboomafoo and enjoy each other's presence.
Sometimes she would drive me around and we would sing Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" album and jam out in the car with the upbeat songs, and emotionally sing the slower songs.
When she lived at my house with her oldest daughter, they would watch music videos with us. I remember dancing like crazy to Missy Elliot's "Lose Control." When I hear that song, I still think of my sister. (also, it has a pretty cool music video).
Of course, we got mad at each other like sisters do sometimes, but that's natural.
She's been moved out for a while and has a whole family of her own: three beautiful kids, a great husband and a cat. She lives pretty much across the country, but we still talk via Facebook like nothing has changed. My sister is biologically only my half-sister, but I've never considered her anything less than a full sister.
I haven't seen her in person in a few years, but I know once I do it'll be just like those times we wrestled, ate Fruit Roll Ups and watched Daria together.
