Life Lessons I Learned From The Cheetah Girls

The cheetah girls were role models for many girls of our generation, so it only makes sense that they had wisdom to impart on us.

I recently had a movie night with one of my best friends and we decided to watch "The Cheetah Girls" and "The Cheetah Girls 2." Yep, you read that right. Two 20-something year olds were watching "The Cheetah Girls." I rewatched all three movies on my own a few days ago. It brought back so many memories of my childhood. Re-watching all the movies a million times, singing along at the top of my lungs, and learning all of the dances just by watching. I loved these movies, and I’ll admit I still really do to this day.

Watching these movies as an adult, however, I was able to really hear what they were actually saying. I realized that there were some pretty solid pieces of advice in all three movies. I’m not just talking about lyrics like “We might get lonely, but we’re not alone” from the song “Cheetah Sisters” at the end of the first movie, or “I’ve made mistakes before, but I know I’m not perfect” from one of my favorite pump-up songs, “Girl Power.” Some of the things they actually said were sweet little nuggets of wisdom that are good to hear at any age.

Here are some of the ones I found the most helpful that stood out to me.

1. “Sometimes you just gotta put yourself out there and not worry about what happens.” –Dorinda

2. “Change will take place whether you like it or not.” – Swami

3. “Eat, sleep, enjoy.” – Luc

4. “I misread, and judged, and everything that I know I shouldn’t do.”- Dorinda

5. “We never leave a man, or dog, behind.” – Aqua

6. “Always wear comfortable shoes and put the heels in a bag, slip them on right before.” – Dorothea

7. “You gotta believe if you want other people to believe.” – Chanel

8. “We worked too hard to give it up. I have to stand up for what’s right.” –Galleria

9. “Sometimes you just have to let go, and let the people you love make their own choices, even if you don’t agree with them.” – Dorothea

10. “She’s not going to make the same mistakes, she’ll make her own. That’s how she’ll learn.” – Franco

11. “What good is eating your vegetables if you can’t have dessert?” – Galleria “Strong bones and teeth!” – Dorothea

12. “If he can’t respect my art, he can’t have my heart.” – Galleria

13. “The point of time is to help you understand where you are, not to make you rush to the next place. – Swami

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
