Life Lessons from John Green

For those of you who don't know, I am a John Green fanatic. He is one of my most favorite people on this entire planet. I first discovered him when I was recommended by a friend a (then fairly unknown) book called The Fault In Our Stars last year. Upon reading this FANTASTIC book, I was instantly hooked. I read everything he had published and watched every single “vlogbrothers" and other genre of Youtube video I could find. I was obsessed. He has changed my life in so many ways with his books. He has taught me many life lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Here are some that I particularly appreciate.

The only way out of the labyrinth of suffering is to forgive"- Looking for Alaska

“You don't get to choose who you hurt in this world. But you do have some say in who hurts you."- The Fault In Our Stars

“When adults say, 'Teenagers think they are invincible' with that sly, stupid smile on their faces, they don't know how right they are. We need never be hopeless, because we can never be irreparably broken. We think that we are invincible because we are. We cannot be born, and we cannot die. Like all energy, we can only change shapes and sizes and manifestations. They forget that when they get old. They get scared of losing and failing. But that part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin and cannot end, and so it cannot fail."- Looking for Alaska

“You can love someone so much… But you can never love people as much as you can miss them."- Paper Towns

“What is the point of being alive if you don't at least try to do something remarkable?"- An Abundance of Katherines

“It's so hard to leave—until you leave. And then it's the easiest goddamned thing in the world."- Paper Towns

“You don't remember what happened. What you remember becomes what happened."- An Abundance of Katherines

“You like someone who can't like you back because unrequited love can be survived in a way that once-requited love cannot."- Will Grayson, Will Grayson

“I figured something out. The future is unpredictable."- An Abundance of Katherines

“The real heroes aren't the people doing things; the real heroes are the people NOTICING things, paying attention."- The Fault In Our Stars

“There's some people in this world who you can just love and love and love no matter what."- An Abundance of Katherines

“What matters to you defines your mattering."- An Abundance of Katherines

“I'm starting to realize that people lack good mirrors. It's so hard for anyone to show us how we look & so hard for us to show anyone how we feel."- Paper Towns'

“Nothing ever happens like you imagine it will."- Paper Towns

“If you don't imagine, nothing ever happens at all."- Paper Towns

“Sometimes people don't understand the promises they're making when they make them."- The Fault In Our Stars

“The pleasure isn't doing the thing, the pleasure is in planning it."- Paper Towns

“Pain is like fabric: The stronger it is, the more it's worth."- The Fault In Our Stars

“The thing about chameleoning your way through life is that it gets to where nothing is real."- An Abundance of Katherines

“We are as indestructible as we believe ourselves to be."- Looking for Alaska

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
