As journalists, we all come together to seek the truth. Since I am a college journalist in the United States, I have realized that I must exercise this right to be a journalist. I am lucky to live in a country where the first amendment of freedom of speech and press are allowed. That being said, over my past years as a student studying journalism in higher education, I have learned many skills and lessons not only can be utilized in the journalism and communications field, but that can be used as life lessons. These lessons will allow me to develop into a more well rounded person.
To start off, the current internship I have at Crisp Solution is one area I have been able to gather new wisdom to use both as a journalist and a person. In my position as a digital communications intern, my internship supervisor gave me advice on to always be curious. This curiosity can lead to a wide array of ideas and perspectives to be understood and it can make someone passionate for learning new material. To me, the idea of always being curious means being well aware of your surroundings and as journalist, one must pay attention to all areas of thinking to be truthful in reporting. The same situation resonates with life because in order to understand a situation, it must be viewed in multiple angles for the issue to be solved.
Also, deadlines are the worst enemies for journalists. Staying on schedule is a must and even staying ahead of deadline is a must. With a rapid changing industry and the stories that are being uncovered that has new content is essential to stay on top of the game. Deadlines are crucial in real world situations in other work environments such as school and other jobs that are not in journalism. You would not want to suffer a lower grade for an assignment not turned in on time for school or in work if something is not done you would not want to have a conversation with your supervisor on this. Deadlines are vital to avoid procrastination and I have learned that people want to stay on top of their priorities.
These lessons of curiosity and deadlines are just a few of the many lessons I have learned in the journalism field. These lessons are practical in the real world. I will still continue to learn what it means to be a journalist and how to infuse these skills as a journalist into the real world. Remember: ALWAYS BE CURIOUS!
