When you grow up in a place like Williamsburg, you are surrounded by what seems like a million things to do. While you were a kid, places like Busch Gardens and Water Country seemed like fun. But now, as an adult (or college student who only lives here in the summer), you have no desire to go to any place where there might be tourists. So, if you grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia, these are some things you know to be true:
1. You went to Jamestown every year on a field trip during elementary AND middle school.
2. You had season passes to Busch Gardens and Water Country every single summer.
3. And this made you low-key hate both of them now.
4. You know when to avoid Prime Outlets.
5. Most people don't know how to drive through Confusion Corner.
6. There's just about as many Starbucks as there are 7-11s.
7. New Town was the place to be in middle school.
8. There's way too much construction.
9. You never wanted to go to William & Mary for college.
10. Kidsburg was the OG park.
11. Paint on Pottery was the best place to have your birthday party.
12. Jamestown Beach is really the only "beach" in town.
13. You wonder why people came to visit Colonial Williamsburg on vacation.
14. The first thing you did when you got your license was drive down the Colonial Parkway with your windows down and radio blaring.
15. You always looked forward to Mondays because your mom would take you to the public library for arts and crafts.
16. Your mom also probably made you do the summer reading program at the same library. (You only did it because you got a Target gift card at the end.)
17. Eastern State Hospital had the best hill for snow sledding, and you were willing to take the risk to go. (If you were a cross-country runner, you dreaded Eastern State!)
18. If you were even more daring, you'd sneak around the old part of Eastern State and try not to get caught (or killed.)
19. You're willing to brave the Cheese Shop crowd because the house dressing is just THAT good.
20. You've seen the rise and fall of Colonial Williamsburg.
21. You were devastated when the climbing tree in CW was banned from climbing.
22. Despite all the tourists, Williamsburg will always be home, and you hope to bring your kids here in the future.
Now that I see how much Williamsburg is growing, there are so many new things to see and do. However, some of the things I did as a kid have been long and forgotten, and it saddens me to see that so many kids won't get to experience Williamsburg the same way I did so many years ago.
