You've probably heard someone say at some point in your life, "I wish life was like a musical." Who wouldn't want that? The special moments in your life given that extra punch of flair with a quick costume change and a gleeful choir to harmonize with your voice and synchronized dancing. Incredible!
Though a choir is hard to find on short notice and a quick costume change could be seen as disturbing outside of theater (to be fair it is a bit uncomfortable even in theater), why not live with a bit more music? Why not make up little songs for yourself to make menial tasks a bit more interesting? Why stand or sit still when you can dance through life (shameless reference to Wicked, I know)?
Why can't we turn our lives into musicals and add in some theatrics?
My family is a prime example of how much better life is when you add some music to it. We don't just shout from down the hall what needs to be added to the grocery list, we like to turn it into brief melodies. We will jokingly bicker as if creating duets. If it's raining, you can bet that we are either singing "Rain Is A Good Thing" or "Singin' in the Rain."
My parents don't dance but my sister and I have had years of dancing classes. I no longer take classes but we use it still to bond and exercise together. My sister and I like to find songs for the other to dance to without revealing the name of the song until it begins to play. The most memorable time we did this was when she had me dance to "The Duck Song." All. Three. Parts. We come up with harmonies to popular songs just to hear the sound of it and if the radio isn't on within ten minutes of starting a car, something is probably wrong.
I met most of my friends through theater and we do little skits together for fun. Two of my best friends once read off texts between our female friend and a potential boyfriend imitating them as poorly as possible. One deepened his voice beyond recognition while the other shot his voice into a falsetto one might expect of a Disney woodland creature. My housemate and I used go for drives to sing duets together so we could escape the real world for a bit. Just sing for hours and get a little lost in town before dragging ourselves to the house again.
Admittedly, I don't even wait for other people to start singing and dancing. Brushing my teeth? I'm jamming to whatever song has caught my fancy. (Lately? "Closer" by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey.) Shower? I have a playlist that's okay for anyone to hear and one that I know which my young sister should not hear the language. (As well as "Closer" on repeat. Not at all sorry to my family suffering from my love for this song.) When I'm well enough, I like to dance in the living room or my bedroom late at night. I hum and softly sing to myself as I walk nearly anywhere.
Live your life like a musical. Don't count on a choir and please keep your clothes on in public where nudity is inappropriate but feel free to sing and dance out your life. Let yourself have a good time because in the event you experience your life flash before your eyes, you don't want to be bored.
