Life As An Ampersand

There's always an 'and.'

Life As An Ampersand

Most people see an ampersand (&) to be just a symbol that stands for the word ‘and.’ I see a much deeper metaphor in the logogram, so much so that I even have an ampersand tattoo.

Life is a never ending series of ‘ands.’ Life goes on, just like an ampersand continues a story. However, we do not have unlimited ‘ands.’ An ampersand symbolizes a broken infinity, meaning that nothing lasts forever, but there is always an ‘and.’ Our stories continue to be written everyday, no matter what life puts in our paths.

The ampersand reminds me that, no matter how hard life becomes, no matter the pain I am feeling, my story is far from over. An ampersand serves as a metaphor for life in this way. Life is full of ups and downs; something more is always to come.

We’ve all had times where we feel there’s no going up, but everything turns out remarkably beautiful. Contrastingly, we’ve all been through amazing points in our lives, only to have everything fall apart. This is why I chose to permanently ink my body with this simple symbol. All I have to do is look down at my wrist and I am reminded that life is made of our struggles and our victories. Without the bumps in the road, we wouldn't know just how great smooth sailing feels.

You go through heartbreak and go on to find someone who was your missing puzzle piece. You drift from a best friend and gain a sister. You fight to make it through illness and end up discovering the power of prayer. We can only find beauty after disaster if we keep going, if we add our ‘and.’

There’s always tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that. Just because you are going through a tough time does not mean you have a terrible life. Think of what is to come instead of once was. Continue your story. Add an ampersand.

As a writer, one of my favorite songs is Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, so I leave you with this, “Today is where your book begins / The rest is still unwritten.”

Fun Fact: The ampersand used to be the 27th part of the alphabet. You learn something new everyday!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
