My family just visited Keylime Cove, a popular waterpark and resort in the Chicagoland area. If I'm being honest, my excitement for waterslides can be quite embarrassing for a 19 year old girl. This trip, I decided to float in the lazy river like a normal young adult. While I was sitting in the inner tube, I started thinking about my life and future and realized it wasn't as different as the river I was currently floating through.
So far throughout childhood, grade school, high school, and one year of college, there have been many different paths to take and choices to make. These choices can be as simple as what sport to play as a child or what friends to hangout with on a Friday night but can also be more challenging like what college to attend or if the boy or girl of your dreams is really the right one for you. All of these choices require some sort of tension or uncertainty because the reality of every situation is that no one really knows what the decision with the best outcome will be.
This is the same with a lazy river. Waterpark guests lay in their inner tubes, close their eyes, and just float. They don't know the path of the lazy river or where they will end up but just trust that they will make it to the end.
Sometimes I think I need to take this approach in life when facing a difficult decision. Many times, I stress and worry over my options because I don't know which one will make me happiest. The truth is that almost every choice someone makes in life will turn out favorably if he or she really works for it. In Deepah Chopra's novel, "The Book of Secrets" Chopra's quote speaks perfectly to these thoughts. He says, "There is no right and wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience." If you look at tough choices as possibilities for the future instead of thinking that one choice will make or break your life, the outcome will definitely be a more preferable one.
So sit back, enjoy the ride, and remember that every decision isn't a life changing one. Either way, things will turn out for the best if you let them. But remember, you're never too old for a good water slide.
