David Burd, more popularly know as 'Lil Dicky', has probably thought of the most brilliant and creative way to expose the rap industry, the upper 1%, and capitalism through his song, '$ave Dat Money'. He satirizes the way in which rappers blow money on toys, drugs, and women. The utter brilliance in his lyrics, as well as the mind-blowing success of his music videos' production both exemplify the way 'normal' people go about their lives by $aving Dat Money.
In doing so, he brought in the wildly popular Fetty Wap and Rich Homie Quan on production to draw general attraction to the song.
I found great difficulty writing this because, stylistically, I faced some challenges. I have to wrestle the grasp of his purpose against his outlandish methods; it's something easier said than done. I'll be analytical in my review of the song, yet keep it funny, because, let's be honest, the song is downright hysterical.
Let's start with the music video. Even in the very beginning, he walks up to houses in Beverly Hills, completely intruding, and asks people if he could film himself inside their homes. He asks McLaren and Lamborghini dealerships to 'borrow' cars for 15 minutes! Imagine the boldness needed to even begin to think of this idea in an era and genre that not only deifies people with money, but completely denounces others in its absence.
Lyrically, from beginning to end he just completely and totally covers every facet of society as told by a stingy, spendthrift. He believes people should be more protective and smart about their money. He comes from a upper-middle class background, but always took it upon himself to work hard in the most unique way. Dare I even call it a song. It is an experience to watch and listen to, probably because you're shocked at his words, or you're peeing your pants in laughter.
It truly is one of the most brilliant moments in rap in recent years. Lil Dicky is not dumb, he completely understood what he was doing, its improbability and it's impact on the industry.
It's definitely something you need to see for yourself, above.
Thanks for reading, enjoy the video.
