Life Advice From The Yahtzee Queen

Grandmothers always have the best advice for life, so I decided to share some of my grandmothers wisdom with you.

  1. When there is nothing to do, play Yahtzee! When you play Yahtzee make sure you always win.
  2. Always laugh to yourself, whether people know what you are laughing at or not, it does not matter. As Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors say, "Laughter is the only thing that will keep you sane."
  3. "Say your prayers and thank God for your blessings".
  4. If you arrive five minutes 'til church starts and the clergy parking spot is empty, it is fair game. "The priest lives here anyway."
  5. It does not matter how much you eat at dinner, even if one more sip of soda is too much; there is always room for dessert.
  6. You may be old on the outside, but you can always be young at heart. You are never too old for simple joys, laughter, and jokes.
  7. Peeing in the pool is not allowed; unless you are laughing too hard. Then it is still not allowed but whatever you were laughing at just became ten times funnier.
  8. Finding a coin on the ground is like finding gold. Whether it’s a penny or quarter, you still gained something you did not have before.
  9. There are times when you just can not understand what someone is saying, she has a simple answer for that; just laugh and nod. Every now and then you can even add a "Mhm" while laughing and nodding.
  10. Sing, even if you do not know the words. If you don't know the words make some up as you go or just hum along anyway.
  11. At her early 90th birthday party about a month ago she quoted a newspaper comic for her life advice, "When I have a headache I drink two beers. When I have a bellyache, I drink a vodka and tonic. When I have high blood pressure, I drink scotch on the rocks. When I have a backache, I drink Jack and ginger ale. And when I drink water, well, I've never been that sick." And when it's five o'clock, it is five o'clock and that is cocktail time.

Her greatest life advice is to have lots of: laughter, light heartedness, kids, grandkids, great grandkids and cocktails. At almost 90 years old, my grandmother is one of the brightest and wisest I know. She is filled with happiness and positivity. She is as sharp as a pin, and very independent. My grandmother is the woman that guides and leads our whole family to the people we are meant to be. She is truly wonderful and inspiring. I hope one day I am as successful in finding the meaning of life as she has.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
