14 Pros And Cons Of Being A Library Assistant

My past few weeks have been filled with rotating from one library branch to another as I complete training for a new position. It occurred to me, during a moment of downtime, that working in a library carries with it some advantages. Yes, it definitely has some awesome perks. It also has less desirable aspects. One for one, here are some pros paired with some cons of working in a library.

Pro: Surrounded by books

Seriously, I feel like this nearly every single time I walk into work.

Con: Can't read them all

Negate all the books I have no desire to read, and there are still too many books to read with my limited free time.

Pro: There's more than just books

Here there be books, but there's also music, movies, and a score of additional services designed to accommodate the diverse needs of the community.

Con: Many patrons borrow only films

It's like a Blockbuster of Family Video, but to borrow costs nothing. Of course, there are limits to how many movies can be checked out, so it's not uncommon for patrons to try beating the system by getting library cards for their children, pets, and deceased cousins eighteen times removed so they can borrow more than a single card will allow.

Pro: Fees are "negotiable"

Not all my fees are shown mercy. A book that was destroyed while in my care, for example. Couldn't really forgive that fine, but I can't tell you the last time I coughed up the cash for a late fee.

Con: Resulting guilt

Mercy is displayed from time to time, but ultimately we at the library must avoid setting precedents from which patrons will try to manipulate the system to their advantage. Makes one feel guilty that we have our own fines forgiven.

Pro: Dibs on new stuff

This is assuming I'm in there when we receive the new material or if a co-worker is willing to set new stuff aside. Helps when you check stuff in and can immediately set it aside.

Con: No self-control

With so much material within reach, the temptation to check everything out is strong. I usually succumb to said temptation, late fees grow, I forgive the fees, and then feel guilty. It's a vicious cycle.

Pro: Get to work with people

From the older gentleman who tells me the most awesome (and corny) jokes to the young adults with whom I have the most fun discussions regarding books, movies, and more, I make the acquaintances of all manner of cool people.

Con: Less-savory people

Without sounding anymore hateful or judgmental, I'll just say I firmly believe some people should not add to the population. If hell exists, I will be going there.

Pro: Relaxed workplace

It's not really this chill nor is it always a low-stress environment, but as a whole, working in a library is pretty relaxing.

Con: Exposure to illness

Some patrons are this gross and I fantasize about burning them alive when they even so much as sniffle. Then you have the filthy, snot-cloud spewing abominations that touch everything (children). Fortunately, I've not died...yet.

Pro: I feel altruistic as hell

On so many levels, librarians are champions of politeness and altruism. Yes, we judge (internally and minimally), but we will afford you cheerful and efficient service regardless of race, religion, socioeconomic status, political opinions, repugnant aromas, etc.

Con: Not the most lucrative job

While different positions within a library system differ in pay grades, if your goal is to make it rain on a regular basis, don't work at a library.

Whether or not I make a career out of working in a library, what do you think of my pros and cons? Ready to apply or run for the hills?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
