An Open Letter To My Big

You absolutely had me fooled, at first. Your clues were extremely confusing, and I had no idea who my Big Sister could be. I was so happy that I had found my home in Zeta Tau Alpha, but the mystery of the identity of my Big was actually driving me insane. When I found out that a Big is a girl who looks out for you, laughs with you, and truly gets to know you, I knew that I had to preference you as my Big. I knew that when I first met you on our lacrosse team that I had found a friend for life. We have the same goofy sense of humor, the same down-to-earth personality, and are both in love with being a Zeta.

Therefore, I knew it was meant to be. But when your first two clues described the complete opposite of you, I have to admit, I was a little bummed. I love all of the girls in our sorority, but I always wanted you to be my Big. When I opened my third clue, I laughed until I cried. Instead of “Love, Your Big” at the end of the clue, “Love, Zoe” was scribbled in your adorably messy handwriting. You actually forgot to be anonymous right in the middle of clue week. I realized from that moment you were trying to confuse me with your clues because I already knew everything about you! I also knew from that moment that you were going to be the best Big Sister in the whole world.

On Big-Little Reveal day, turning around to see you was such a blessing. I gained an entire family of sweet sisters, and I could not be happier to become the newest member of the Shambles Family. I’ve only been your Little for a week, but I feel like you’re already the blood sister I never had. I love our breakfast and lunch dates, your endless encouragement, and the 100+ t-shirts you’ve passed down to me.

Zoe, you have so much compassion and love in your heart. You don’t have a mean bone in your body. You are one of the funniest people I’ve ever met, and it’s impossible not to smile around you. Thank you for being one of the first people to make me fall in love with Zeta Tau Alpha. Because of you, I truly feel at home. Thanks for pushing me during lacrosse practices, for pushing me to be a better person, and for actually reading these articles every week. You’re actually my biggest cheerleader, and I am so thankful for you.

To the best Big in the whole world: I am going to try to be the best Little I can be. Thank you for being you. You may be number 99 on the field, but you are definitely number 1 in my heart.

Love,

Your Little

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
