A Letter to my Younger Sister

Because I have you, I will always have a friend.

A Letter to my Younger Sister
Tess Bundt

Hey. It’s me, your older sister. You’re probably thinking this is insanely cliché, me reaching out to you by a letter through the internet. But this is important, and I need you to hear it.

As your older sister, it was my natural obligation to harass you when we were little. You would take my things, steal my clothes, follow me around, and basically annoy me in every way possible. Everything you did, as my younger sister, just bothered me for no real reason at all. That’s just the way it was. And for those little things, I became the big sister from hell; always picking fights, bossing you around, yelling at you, calling you names when you annoyed me, and everything else in the book. But hey, that’s what sisters did at that age, right? Thinking about this, now that I live hours away from home, I realized something terrible. I miss you.

You see, even though we constantly fought and drove each other crazy, even back then there was nothing I wouldn’t do for you. If anyone tried to hurt you, they had to get through me. If anyone looked at you funny, they would feel my eyes burning into their skull right behind you. When you wanted to hang out with me and my friends, I always included you. Not because our Mom said I had to, but because I secretly wanted you there.

Ever since I left for school, I notice our relationship has changed. Maybe it’s because we are getting older or maybe it’s because we aren’t constantly getting in the way of each other as much, but I’ve noticed that it’s changed. I look forward to seeing you on breaks. Talking to you has become so much easier. Some siblings grew up very close, some grew up so close that they fought all of the time. That was the case with us, but not any more.

The purpose of this letter is to tell you that as your big sister, I will always be there for you. Nothing in the world could ever change that. I only wish the best for you and will support you in everything you do. No matter where you end up in life, I will not be too far behind, cheering you on. Even though I may not show it at times, and even though we fight, I will always love you because you are my sister.

Love always,

Your Big Sis

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
