Dear incoming cardinals,
Starting your first year of college can be exciting, nerve racking and even a bit scary! For some, it's your first time you'll be out on your own! For others, it's the first time you will be financially independent. Nonetheless, it can be a bit overwhelming! So here's a few tips to guide you a long the way!
First, organization is key! This is especially important if your commuting! Unlike those who stay on campus, if you forget something, it's not just a five minute walk! Keep the books and binders in your backpack that you need for that day, not the entire week. Your shoulders and back will thank me for that one! Another easy way to stay organized, is a planner! Whether it be putting the assignments in on your phone or having one you carry with you. Having three to six classes, it's the easiest way to stay organized.
Second, don't be afraid to talk to your professors! I know it can be intimidating at first, but they are there to help you! If you don't understand something, speak up! Chances are, is that you're not the only one! Proffessors office hours are great oppertunitys to ask in a more private setting if your scared to speak up in class. Turn to the tutoring center for help as well, or people with in your major taking the same class.
Third, don't overload your work schedule with your school schedule. That was my biggest mistake my freshmen year, working weekends is more then enough! Or look for jobs on campus, some allow you to do homework while you work! If you want a job, find one that is willing to put your school schedule first!
Fourth, join a student organization! With hundreds of them all over campus, use your interests to help you find the one that is the best fit for you! Even as a commuter, I am able to be apart of one! If you like to write, give the Odyssey a try! If your good at sports, try out for a club team or even a recreational one! Try out for a play if you like to act! Don't be afraid to put your self out there, or try something you've never done before!
Lastly, don't get discouraged. Not every college class you take you will love. And you may not be good at every class you take. But don't let discourage you from your end goal. If you want to be a nurse but your intimated by the amount science classes, let your fear drive you to your success. Don't let one class or maybe one intimidating professor discourage you from you dream. Because when you look back in four years, you will look back and know that you did it. You persevered, through the difficulty. If you do end up changing your major, know that it's okay! You are one step closer to finding something you love doing!
College can be some of the best four years of your life! Let go of what you can't change and live in the moment!
Sincerely,
Your fellow Cardinal
