A Letter To The Average Girl

Honestly, we're anything but

A Letter To The Average Girl

You get on Instagram and start your aimless scrolling making a futile attempt at passing the time. You scroll through the number of celebrities that you follow and see their perfectly taken selfies, and you see the massive amount of likes each picture gets. Now, most people don’t get over 100,000 likes on each picture, but everybody has THAT friend. The friend that gets almost 100 likes on each picture, and you are struggling to get to the point where it’s numbers and the three pity-likers' names. I know the struggle. I’m average. Average intelligence, average looks, average abilities -- I just don’t seem to ever excel at things.

Now I’m not complaining, I still have had some pretty good breaks for an average person. I’ve held leadership positions and such, but I’ve never really been able to go above and beyond. As I approach senior I’m becoming more and more okay with it. I’m learning that even though I am average I can still do everything I set my mind to it.

This is for all the average girls. All the girls struggling to get those likes. All the girls who are constantly comparing themselves to their friends. There is no need to do that. You don’t need to compare yourself to anyone. Just because you may feel like you are average (like me), doesn’t mean anything. There are people out there who will look at us like we are both the sun and the moon.

We can do anything that we set our minds to. There are so many possibilities out there and the nice thing is… WE CAN DO ALL OF THEM. We don’t just excel at one thing we can do so many things. It keeps life interesting. We can just jump from activity to activity and do all the things we ever dreamed of. I know that I have done so many things that I never thought that I would. I flat line in them, but you know what? I can say that I’ve had these experiences. I can say that I did all these different things and when I go out there to the real world and start to try this whole adulting thing I’ll have these differences to show what I need to do to be the best me I can be.

Go out there and try everything. Post all those selfies, and don’t pay any attention to the likes. Go out and experience the world and all that it has to offer. Build up those skills by trying everything. Maybe you’ll find something that you’re extra good at. You never know what you may find unless you put yourself out there.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
