The Will Ferrell movies and the fairy tales make it seem like children naturally hate their stepparents, or are at least supposed to. For me, it couldn't be more opposite. The prefix "step" belittles the huge role that you've had in my life for over a decade now. Throughout the years, you've been a father figure and a best friend, and I will always be grateful to have you in my life.
Thank you for motivating me to do my very best. You have high, intimidating expectations, but I know it's because you've always had my best interests at heart. You were strict about curfew, but I know you just wanted me to be safe. You have always supported my hopes and dreams and pushed me to do well in school in order to reach them (despite my constant complaining).
Thank you for understanding me. You taught me nearly everything I know about music, and never fail at cheering me up with a corny joke or an interesting fact. You have been a source of inspiration and strength over the years; a shoulder to cry on, a friend to laugh with, an adult to look up to. We have so much in common that it would be impossible for us not to get along.
Thank you for never seeing my sister and me as baggage that came with my mom. You love us as your own, anyone and everyone can see it. You never considered us to be a burden, and continue to put us first. You've been involved in our lives from the beginning, from band concerts to sports games, to vacations, to moving me into college, to joining a running "club" together. Even during a break-up or a tough homework assignment, you've been there to help me out.
You make our family complete and my mother happy, and that's all I could ever ask for. Another thing I will always appreciate is that you have never tried to take the place of my biological father. I am lucky enough to have two great father figures who both contributed unique but integral parts to who I am today.
Again, I've seen the movies, and I can't imagine how tough it was to join a new family. But you fit in as if you've been here the whole time. I am blessed to be your daughter, and I can't thank you enough for everything you do for us.
With much love and appreciation,
Your Daughter
