Let’s be honest, sometime this week, someone has mentioned your single life. "Why aren’t you with someone, or why don’t you date?" The look on their faces expresses that something must be wrong with you. God forbid, you are single in college; there obviously must be something wrong with you, you probably are crazy or something.
Growing up, I never thought I would be single this long. I had my whole life mapped out for me. I was going to meet a boy in college and fall in love and get married. But that didn’t happen. At first, I was sad, like 'threw my popcorn at the TV during love scenes' sad. But I’m OK with it now because I’m just loving me at the moment.
Someone does not have to define you in order for you to be happy. Finding out what made myself truly happy was the first step in achieving happiness. I will never settle again. This means that I didn’t need someone to make me pancakes or text me 24/7, there's always IHOP and friends. I don’t need someone in my life, and you shouldn’t either. Now, wanting someone in your life is a completely different story, but want and need are two different topics. We are all strong independent people, and you can make yourself happy.
Countless people ask me why I’m single, and when I answer with I choose to be, the look on their face is priceless, like being single in college is a sin. But why? Why must I have a man on my arm to be accepted or happy? This idea that everything is better in relationships has to stop. So many people are getting married or having babies and that is excellent, I love that. But I’m not ready. I’m not ready for that kind of commitment or responsibility when I can barely decide on what to eat, let alone what to wear. We can enjoy our freedom; do what we want when we want. We can make huge life decisions without thinking of someone else.
That might sound selfish but I would never want to miss an opportunity because I thought “he was the one” and I had to stay close to him. I have dreams too. I want to chase my dreams just like anyone else. I want to fall in love one day too. But for right now, I’m OK with being single and finding out what makes me truly happy, as should you.
So yeah, you are single, but so am I, and so are countless other people. Don’t be sad and definitely don’t waste your popcorn by throwing it at the TV, because there is someone out there for you. They are your future, but as of right now, chase your dreams and be a little selfish. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad for being single when you are young, wild, and free.
