Dear Parents,
You are the ones who are with us at the start of it all. You are there for us through preschool, high school and everything in between. We all know that those formative years were no cake-walk, with our know-it-all attitudes and our constant need to be out of the house. College was different. Our first year of college was where we realized our attitudes are no match for three essays, two tests and a mound of homework all due within in week. But, parents, you were there when things got tough between friends, when relationships fell apart and even when we just needed a simple reminder that things would be OK.
Moms, we know you had a hard time watching your little ones pack our things into boxes and bags and drag them load by load in to our dorm rooms. You wanted to make our beds just like you like to and put our clothes away just one last time. We thought you were being neurotic and it embarrassed us in front of our roommates. Weeks later, our clothes were in piles on the floor, our bed sheets were completely untucked and we were doing a perfectly good job embarrassing ourselves on our own. We missed the way you did things for us and would have given anything for you to just be able to make our bed again because that’s how we sleep well at night; we wanted clean clothes that actually got folded after coming out of the dryer because those were the comfiest to wear. Thank you to all our moms, who did everything they could to make us comfortable one last time before we went on our own.
Dads, you had to keep a strong face on just in case mom decided to get teary eyed again. You lugged the big boxes and bags in to our dorms. We usually hit you up if we ever needed money for the occasional weekend extravaganza or some real food (like really real food, not D-hall food). You quietly kept us going with the reinforcements we needed from late night snacks to random texts letting us know you had our backs if we needed anything. Dads, you always knew exactly what we needed, even when we didn’t. You were able to be there for mom when her babies went off to college. So thank you for being the shoulder we all needed.
Parents, thank you, for the late night calls you answered, the $20 loans for pizza and the all around support you gave us during our first year away from home. We couldn’t have done it without you. With sophomore year coming up, we know we can handle the relationships, the friendships and the mounds of work we’ll have because we have you. Thanks again, parents.
Sincerely,
Your College Freshman
