A Letter To My Younger Brother On His Junior Prom Day

Dear Little Brother,

It’s crazy how fast you grew up. Being two years older than you, I am able to watch you grow into the young man you are today and watch you cherish the greater moments throughout your life.

I remember the first day you brought home your very first girlfriend and how excited I was to meet her. Now, as you are a junior in high school, I can watch you pick out a matching tie to match your girlfriend's dress and send you to what was one of the best nights of my life, junior prom. I’m sorry I will not be able to see you all dressed in your suit looking dapper or take pre-prom pictures with you because I will be stuck at school, but I know without a doubt, mom will be sending me tons of photos, and for me not being in any pictures, hey that’s what Photoshop is for.

When you told me that you were going to ask your girlfriend with a poster that would say “Are you up to go to prom with me?” and a handful of colorful balloons to symbolized the movie "Up," my heart melted. It was not one of those typical prom proposals with flowers, and I knew it was sincerely from the bottom of your heart.

It was just a month ago when I was home and bugging you to go pick out a suit and tie, and now this week you will be heading to junior prom. Your black pin-striped suit and the solid black tie will match her dress beautifully. Oh and one more thing, don’t forget the corsage.

As you are putting on your suit, there will be a million different emotions running through your head, like being anxious. You will picture your girlfriend in her dress in your head before she arrives for pictures, and you will get butterflies (trust me, it’s normal). From that point on, you will be anxious to see her, and boy you better compliment her so many times throughout the night, because the little things are what girls love the most.

Since junior prom is in February this year, it will be chilly while taking pictures in front of the pool. I’m warning you now: Your girlfriend will make you take a ton of pictures with you, so please cooperate.

Junior prom in the gym may not be the most exciting event, but you will make the most out of it. You will walk into the gym and see the lovely venue that student council has put together. Everyone will be either taking pictures or sitting awkwardly at these tables, because no one will be dancing yet. Be that brave soul, break the ice and be the first one to bust a move. When one person gets it started, everyone will follow. As you begin to sit down for dinner, you all will be anxious to get out and get started with the after-prom festivities. As for after prom, I just want to say please make smart decisions, be safe, and do have fun until 5 a.m., because your teenager years are over within a blink of an eye.

There is no doubt in my mind that you and your girlfriend will be the best looking couple there. She is truly lucky to have someone like you because I know you will protect her and always keep her smiling. I can’t wait to see pictures and hear all about your night. Keep being the gentleman you are, be safe, and have fun!

Love,

Sis

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
