To The Best Roommate a Friend Could Ask For

Dear Roommate,

I know we have about a little over a month left of living together, but I wanted to type of this letter expressing my thanks to you for being an awesome roommate. You will either roll your eyes and laugh at this letter or genuinely enjoy it, but I'm going to do this anyways.

I'm glad I decided to not do a random roommate option this past summer. That would have been the worst possible choice I could have made. I remember FaceBook messaging you asking if you had a roommate, and one thing led to another and we decided to room together. I knew after talking about PS4 and Star Wars we would have an awesome year together.

You always know when to keep me in line and help me make smart decisions. I really don't know where I would be sometimes if you didn't motivate me to do my work or go out and take a break. Seeing you do your work and study all the time made me want to be a better student at college. You have a great work ethic and honestly I think it rubbed off on me a little. Whenever I tell you I might skip a class you always find a way to make me change my mind, and I could not be more thankful for that. You make me work harder without even doing anything. You're a great role model my dude.

When it comes to not doing work, you're always a fun guy to hang out with. I never walk back to our room thinking to myself, "I don't want to be in a room with this kid." Sometimes I'm curious as to whether or not you will be in the room because you're either always doing something or laying in bed watching weird YouTube videos. I enjoy playing FIFA, Call of Duty, Apex, and other games with you. It really breaks up my day and allows me to just relax. You got me into FIFA, and you even have me interested in watching more soccer games. I never thought I would actually enjoy soccer, so congratulations on that.

When you surprised me with peanut butter M&Ms I think I died inside. Best random gift ever. You got me a Chelsea jersey for Christmas, and it literally made my day. It is the little things that you do that means a lot to me and makes me cherish our friendship. We share things in our room whether it be video games, food, drinks, or anything else. We have a good relationship and I am very glad it worked out so well for us.

Yes, there are times where I wish you didn't have 80,000 pairs of shoes lying all over the place, but you are a true bro when it comes down to all things said and done. We have a great system with our room and the way we handle things and I'm grateful for that. We don't always agree on things, but in the end I wouldn't want anyone else to be my freshman roommate. Any other person would have changed my whole first year experience. Whether it would have been for the better or the worse, I don't know. All I know is I'm happy with the experiences we shared together this year. I hope that we can continue our friendship for the years to come, and you are always welcome to come over the my apartment next year. Excited for what the rest of the year has in store for us. Stay you my dude, and thank you again for everything.

Your Friend,

Al

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
