An Open Letter to My Mother

Thank you, Mom.

An Open Letter to My Mother
Emily Weichelt

Some people say that they would hate to turn out like their mother. I would be lucky if I turned out to be half the woman mine is.

When I was younger, sometimes "I can't wait to move out!" would come out of my mouth as I would storm to my room because my mother said "No." Now that I am a month away from freshmen move in day at college, moving away from my mother is a scary thought to wrap my head around.

The line "Mama knows best" is one that I came to realize has a lot of truth behind it. I am not afraid to say that without my mother I surely would be lost.

Thank you mom for loving me when I was at my lowest.

Low points in life are a reality even human faces. Through these trials, its becomes clear who true friends are, and you never left my side. You always opened her arms to me after a rough day at work or school. Something about a mother's hug is different from anyone else's and always feels safe.

Thank you for being strong, for me and yourself.

This past year has been the hard on our whole family, but you have stayed strong throughout it all. Even when you were facing cancer, you were more concerned with how your family was coping. Mom, you took care of dad in the hospital at the same time you were receiving radiation treatments. Not once throughout this whole process have you said "Why me?" but instead have looked to God.

Thank you for always be right.

Yeah, I admitted it. That one guy you told me was bad news? Even though at the time I didn't see it, you were right. Or when you told me I should bring a jacket because it will get cold later on? I should've listened. All the wasted money I've spent on items I NEEDED so badly? I really didn't need them. You were right, again. If only I would have listened to you when you told me that ahead of time.

Thank you for helping me be closer to God.

You raised your whole family in a house that loved the LORD and I thank you for that. You set my priorities straight at a young age.

Thank you for listening.

If there is one person I can tell anything and everything too, it's you. From listening to me talk about The Bachelorette and One Tree Hill constantly to waking up when I just need someone to talk to at 2 a.m. You're the real MVP.

Thank you for showing me how to beautiful.

I'm meaning inside beauty. I've seen you get up early to make breakfast for a family to making meals for the ill. Your true beauty is putting others before yourself. From letting your kids borrow your car to surprising me with a clean room when I come home from work. All these little things I realize, and there is no one more beautiful or more caring than you mom.

I love you, Mom.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
